Successful parenting requires hard work and dedication because it is perhaps the most important responsibility in one’s life. Unfortunately it is also the one that we are the least prepared for! Being a parent doesn't always mean that you automatically or instinctively know what to do. The course in Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) focuses on teaching parents practical communication skills to assist them in their parenting, whether they're the parent of a toddler or a teenager.
The PET course teaches skills to convert conflict into a positive growth experience by learning how to:
- Listen to your children
- Talk, so that they listen to you
- Manage conflict with win-win solutions
When parents use these skills, they are amazed with the dramatic improvement both in their families’ and in all their relationships.
Invest in lasting loving relationships with your children!
Kreatiewe Ouerskap (Creative Parenting) was started in 1998 by Maggie Heyneke, a qualified teacher. Maggie was trained as instructor in PET by a Gordon Training International (GTI) (www.gordontraining.com) instructor in 1981, when Frikkie van Kraayenburg (Lead the Field) brought the program to South Africa. The program was translated into Afrikaans in 1981 as Doeltreffende Ouerskap Leiding (DOL), and has been regularly revised by Maggie with the support of other instructors to keep it up to date with changes in society.
Maggie has been instructing PET/DOL since 1981, when her children were toddlers, and has been training instructors in PET/DOL since 1999.
She is the licensee of Gordon Training International for PET/DOL in South Africa.

“I solved problems that I thought were unsolvable with the application of these skills”
“I always had a feeling that alternative methods must be available. I just never knew what it was. PET showed me!”
“The PET course is an eye-opener. I realised that my children are individuals with their own perceptions. I started treating them with more respect, and now they are treating each other with more respect.”
“How successful you are as a parent, will depend on the way you speak to your child” - Dr. Thomas Gordon, Author of Parent Effectiveness Training.
