In her own words

I first heard in 1981 about the American Dr Thomas Gordon’s training program for parents, namely “Parent Effectiveness Training” (PET). I realised that a need existed in the local community for parenting training, and I attended the first and only instructors program presented by a G.T.I. representative here in South Africa. Iwas one of the first local instructors and presently I am one of the longest serving instructors world-wide.

I am extremely thankful I heard about the course in 1981. I would have hated to continue my very important task as parent without sufficient knowledge and specific skills. When I heard on the radio about this program that trains parents, I realised that my three children (then toddlers) and we as parents could only benefit from it. When somebody learns communication skills, he/she benefits all-round, not only as a parent.

Today, after years of teaching many parents PET skills, the most rewarding experience is to get feedback from children (now adults) who grew up with parents who used the PET techniques and skills: “..... years ago my mother decided to attend a PET course ..... she was so despondent with raising three toddlers that she was prepared to listen to new ‘ways’ in parenting. Later she dragged my father along. PET made me what I am, that’s how I grew up, and it is the only way I understand. The impact it had on our lives is amazing. Not only as children, but mostly it ensured that now as adults, we have a superb relationship with our parents. From a child who grew up in a PET home, I want to thank you for making the world a better place .... “

What others say

"Maggie has a calm and relaxed style – she does not force one to change for the sake of changing only, but guided me in a positive way to become a better parent. This also resulted in a much happier family ."

"It is easy to have frank and open discussions with Maggie about any issue."

"… I wish to congratulate Maggie with a very successful course! Her insight of the PET principles is highly developed. She presents with a good sense of humour, is straight forward with-out offending and I appreciated her sincere, genuine advice!"
