I have over 20 years of experience teaching P.E.T. to parents and fellow instructors in South Africa. My P.E.T. journey started in 1998 after I read about the course in a magazine. The article was a wake-up call for me as a parent; it made realise that I doubted my parenting method. So, I attended my first P.E.T. course in 1999, and I haven't looked back since. After completing the Instructor Training Workshop, I also obtained my BSocSci(Hons) in Psychology, and I became an official South African representative of for Gordon Training International in 2012.

After university, I moved into the school educational environment, teaching learners from Grade 4 up to Grade 10.  The fields of psychology and teaching have always fascinated me.

In 2017, I discovered Parent Effectiveness Training. Little did I know at the time that only a year later, I would become a mother for the first time. I can honestly say that I've experienced the value of this course as both an instructor and a new mother and it is honestly one of the better programmes out there. I would recommend this course to every parent out, whether you have a newborn, toddler, or teenager. I would love to share P.E.T. with you. Feel free to visit my website: and get in touch.

I attended my first P.E.T. course heavily pregnant with my first child, very relieved that this baby did, in fact, come with a manual. The manual, and repeating the course three more times, did not make parenting any easier but has provided an invaluable source of information and support in dark parenting times. As my children grow older and more and more able to express themselves, it is wonderful to hear the way they use the tools taught in the course to communicate effectively. I am deeply grateful to Heidi Malan and P.E.T. for this. As an Educational Psychologist practicing as a SHIP facilitator, I enthusiastically refer clients to P.E.T. courses as I know first hand what a difference the course can make in the quality of any relationship, particularly parent-child relationships.

I studied at UP and became a teacher, following in my parents’ footsteps. From a young age, I have been interested in education and child upbringing.  When my three daughters (now adults) were born, I became a stay-at-home mom and was launched boots-and-all into child rearing. When I ‘discovered’ P.E.T., I was very excited and instantly became involved. The skills acquired will enable you to build meaningful relationships for life.

I am confident about this programme because of the success I have had in my own relationships. My wish is to reach as many parents, with children of all ages, to share this life-changing experience. Many adults manage to just survive emotionally in this world, having to carry the burden of a lifetime of ineffective communication. If we can spare our children this baggage, they can go through life so much easier and ‘lighter.' I am passionate about these programmes as they offer proven solutions for all walks of life and relationships. It is never too early or too late.

Born in the Netherlands, I fell in love with South Africa in 1994, and moved with my family to Boschkop in 2003. I have a background in illustration and education and am currently completing a BA degree in applied Social Sciences, majoring in counselling. Parenting is my passion, I honestly believe it is the most important job in the world, and when done effectively, results in creative, compassionate human beings with less issues than their parents, and the courage and confidence to change the world. Since qualifying as a P.E.T facilitator in 2019, I now use my passion to empower others to become more effective parents.

I am foremost a wife and a mommy of two. P.E.T changed my life completely. I was raised by an authoritarian mother and thought that I would probably do the same, as this is all I knew. After completing the course, my relationships as a whole changed; with my daughter, husband and everyone around me. I had found my instruction manual – a way to effectively communicate and get my needs met as well as building positive relationships with the ones that really matter in my life. The course had such a significant impact on me that I obtained my international certification to become an Instructor. I then obtained my qualifications as a Master Life Coach, specialising in relationship and communication.

I started as a P.E.T. mom in 2011. Desperate and worried; my daughter was ten at the time and my son six.  Our relationship was full of conflict and scarce conversation. A friend referred me to Heidi Malan. My life changed; P.E.T. is like a big ocean liner, it takes hard work and effort to turn it around, but once you've done that sailing, it is so much easier. I present a course or sometimes two per school term, morning and evening classes. P.E.T. has changed my family's life forever. Not only do I have an incredible relationship with my daughter, now 17, I have also learned that the more you invest in yourself, the more you can give to those around you.

As an older mom, I have very few peers with young children. When my son introduced me to the unforgettable ‘fours,’ I desperately started looking around for help. Gratefully I was introduced to P.E.T. and given an excellent set of skills that empowered me as a mom. I was delighted when one of my oldest friends (80 years old) shared her experience of doing the P.E.T. course 40 years ago. She raised three resourceful, responsible and creative children who are today champions of themselves and influential leaders in their fields of expertise. My biggest desire is to share these principles and allow similar opportunities to unfold.

P.E.T. | T.E.T.

Melanie is an Educational Psychologist accredited with the National Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). She has attended numerous courses over the years and believes in constantly developing herself on a professional, as well as on a personal level. She believes that children and adolescents have the innate ability to heal and grow into all that they can be. Humans are too unique to be labelled. It is therefore essential to address the child or teenager from a holistic point of view or frame of reference. Melanie, therefore, aims to incorporate the psychological, physiological and social aspect in providing comprehensive, assessment and therapeutic services.
