Successful parenting requires hard work and dedication because it is perhaps the most important responsibility in one's life. Unfortunately, it is also the one that we are the least prepared for! Twenty years ago, my husband and I realised that we were not adequately prepared to build mutually satisfying and quality relationships with our children. Fortunately, we were introduced to the P.E.T. course, and this assisted both of us greatly to overcome the uncertainties and anxieties associated with parenting. It will be a privilege to present P.E.T. to you and your parenting partner and to assist you in acquiring skills and techniques that will benefit your family!

I first attended the Parent Effectiveness Training course as a parent, wanting to understand my children better, but also to see if the way that I’ve been raised was the only/best way to raise our children. My husband and I grew up in entirely different households, so we didn’t always agree on how to raise and discipline our daughters, and I was tired of being the bad cop and hubby being the good cop! I use the skills I’ve learned in all my relationships, not just with my children. I also encourage my clients in my practice to try it at home – with so many success stories.

My interest in the bonding between parent and child has always been part of my passion for social work. The influence of a parent on a child determines most of the child’s holistic development and social functioning as an adult. The perspective of Dr Thomas Gordon overshadowed most of what I believed was good parenting skills. I started to apply the skills with my children, surprised to see what the outcome was. I also got to know myself better and could even use the skills in my relationship with my husband. The benefits of the techniques learned from P.E.T. are endless. I am excited to share it, as well as my own experiences, with other parents.

Motherhood was a rude awakening for someone who thrives on order. I needed to find real answers and real skills for the day to day challenges and at the same time to be able to maintain and grow healthy and strong relationships with my children. P.E.T. answered my questions and gave me a clear framework from which to approach parenting. As a medical professional, communication is an interest, because so often the results of poor communication cause pain and take much time and work to address. Communication theory and skills training were part of the masters programme I completed, particularly in the professional interface of breaking bad news and in assisting families to cope with life-threatening and life-limiting medical conditions.  I have found P.E.T. so beneficial in growing my awareness and my skills for helping families.

After completing my Honours in Psychology, I started working in the field, and held the position of Psychometrist and Interpersonal Skills facilitator for five years, with Psygro Consulting Psychologists, an organisation that offers psychological services to a variety of blue chip organisations within and outside the borders of South Africa. I completed my Masters in Clinical Psychology in 2006 and then worked in an Internship post at Panorama Medi-Clinic (2007). Once registered for Independent Practice, my consulting career began where I worked in various roles as a consulting clinical psychologist, for both organizations as well as private patients.

As a floundering young parent, I read "P.E.T." in 1978. It stood out as the most loving and workable approach. It is wonderful to see the relief and joy experienced by my clients as they change from feeling anxious and defeated to calm and confident, knowing how to respond to their children helpfully and effectively. Parents understand their children better once they learn how to listen. Problems can be solved more creatively when everyone contributes to a solution that satisfies each person. I offer parents individual support during and after the course.
